About Us

The “You’ve Got a Friend” Foundation was established in 1998, as a non-profit organization to develop a partnership between the community and local law enforcement. The Foundation’s signature event, the “You’ve Got a Friend” Day, was originally created in 1994 for the Charlottesville Police Officers Association, as a community youth outreach program serving the Charlottesville and Albemarle County communities.

The Foundation’s organizers quickly discovered an overwhelming interest, from Law Enforcement Agencies from throughout the Virginia Commonwealth, to participate as well. The “You’ve Got a Friend” Day was viewed by Law Enforcement not only as an avenue for connecting with the youth, the event grew into a networking forum for officers’ to learn from their peers on techniques they utilized for reaching the youth in their communities- Each agency had the opportunity to take new ideas back to explore with the youth in their City or county.

The Ist “You’ve Got a Friend” Day exceeded our expectations by drawing 3,000 attendees and 36 area Law Enforcement agencies in 1994. Over the next nine years, the event worked its way up to 8,000 attendee’s annually and 85 Local, State and Federal agencies from the surrounding areas of Charlottesville and Albemarle County and from through out the Virginia Commonwealth and Washington D.C.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the You’ve Got a Friend Foundation ceased operations in 2003. An attempt was made to pass the Foundation’s concept and mission on to local Law Enforcement, but due to limited resources the “You’ve Got A Friend” Day was not sustainable.

Our Vision

Currently, the (YGAF) Foundation is being resurrected by the original Founder and his Board of Directors. Where the Police reach out to the community to say “hey”, we’re here to serve you and we do care,” and as an effective catalyst to cause positive community growth and change, by bonding youth, parents, individuals, schools, churches, civic organizations, businesses, communities, and Law Enforcement together, thus, the “Community Partnership”

Let’s work together

The development of our youth, who ARE the future of our country, rests upon certain essential building blocks such as family values, trust, teamwork, education, leadership and communication. These building blocks exist when a safe and productive environment is provided. However, juvenile crime and substance abuse caused by declining family and moral values and fueled by the lack of community involvement has led to its decay.
